DESCRIPTION:Algebra can seem like an arid discipline\, useful but unattract
ive. However\, appearances are in this case misleading. On the contrary\,
there are beauties in algebra as compelling as the facets of a perfect gem
stone. It is not possible to fit a semester’s worth of a challenging subje
ct into three short talks but I will try to show directions in which some b
eautiful results can be found.\n\nThe titles of the talks are – \n\nMonday
\, “The Cubic Equation\, Rafael Bombelli and the Surprising Usefulness of √
-1”. \n\nTuesday\, “The Complex Plane and the Roots of Unity.” \n\nWednesd
ay\, “Finite Field Extensions: What Euclid Didn’t Know About Constructing
Regular Polygons.”\n\nAny who wish to come are welcome.
