Saturday, June 28, 2025 2pm to 4pm
60 College Ave, Annapolis, MD 21401
On Saturday, June 28, from 2-4 p.m., please join us in the Mitchell Art Museum as we engage in a group discussion on chapters 1 and 9 of Gaston Bachelard's classic book, The Poetics of Space.
This iconic work of phenomenological inquiry explores the ways human beings are affected by architecture. Describing the emotional nature of our relationship to buildings, Bachelard investigates how the home (or personal space) comes to be both an exhibition and an embodiment of the soul.
Presented on the occasion of our current exhibition, "r aster syrell: Approaching the Garden", this seminar directly echos the underlying theme of aster's work in our museum -- that is, the way we respond to our built surroundings, how the natural exterior world corresponds to our intimate interior spaces, and the way beauty operates in both.
A free PDF of the book is available online at: https://sites.evergreen.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/88/2015/05/Gaston-Bachelard-the-Poetics-of-Space.pdf. The assigned chapters are Chapter 1, "The House: From Cellar to Garret. The Significance of the Hut" and Chapter 9, "The Dialectics of Outside and Inside". The total amount of pages is 56.
To sign up / RSVP for this seminar, send us an email at mitchellartmuseum@sjc.edu.
We look forward to welcoming you to this event!
Sincerely,
The /m Team
