DESCRIPTION:The museum is proud to present a newly commissioned\, site-spec
 ific artwork by New York-based\, internationally recognized artist Polly A
 pfelbaum. Made from fabric samples and remnants purchased in New York's Ga
 rment District\, the "painting" occupies most of the gallery's floor. The 
 work poses such fundamental questions as\, "What is painting?"\, "What is 
 originality?"\, "What is order?"\, and "What are the bases of our judgment
 s?"\, and finally\, "What do we look down on?". \n\nAbout the Artist: Poll
 y Apfelbaum achieved renown in the 1990s for making anti-monumental\, larg
 e-scale “paintings” in fabric directly on museum floors. Her work is i
 n the collections of the Belvedere 21 Museum of Contemporary Art\, Vienna\
 ; Brooklyn Museum of Art\; Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh\; Museum of
  Modern Art in New York\; Philadelphia Museum of Art\; Whitney Museum of A
 merican Art in New York\, among others. She is represented by Frith Street
  Gallery in London and Galerie Nacht St. Stephen in Vienna.\n\nThis instal
 lation is free and open to the public.
