Professor Lawrence Kramer from Fordham University will deliver their lecture, Imagining Music: Performance as Interpretation.
Performances of classical compositions are commonly described as interpretations. This talk asks how the description might be true in a non-trivial sense. It will explore the idea that the performance of a musical score can propose and reveal meanings comparable to those found in the interpretation of literature and visual art. Examples include performances of music by Beethoven, Robert Schumann, and, if there is time, Debussy.
