Billed as "the world's most fiendishly difficult literary puzzle," Cain's Jawbone, by Edward Powys Mathers aka Torquemada, is a country-house style murder mystery. As is typical, we as readers don't know who committed the murder(s), but in addition:

• We don't know who has been murdered, or how many murders have occurred.

• The 100 pages in the novel are printed out of sequence

• Much of the useful information in the novel is obscured behind "cryptic crossword" style clues and phrases that are embedded in the text.

We need to solve the "crossword" clues, sequence the pages, and then read the book to discover the murderer(s) and confirm the identity of their victim(s).

There's a copy of the book in the library, and (I think) a few copies are available in the bookstore. You definitely don't need to own your own copy to join in. 

We'll meet from 4-6 p.m. Wednesdays in the Cohen Study Room at the Library, starting Wednesday September 2. We can talk about how best to tackle the project at that meeting. If you have thoughts about strategies, please bring them along!
