An eclectic, Spanish-language used bookstore that is also a piece of social practice artwork, by Mexican-born, New York-based artist/educator Pablo Helguera. Helguera has taken this piece to major cities around the world for the past 10 years, including Paris, New York, Chicago, Seattle, Boston, Anchorage, and Santa Cruz. In each of these cities, it was the only Spanish-language bookstore. He is the former Director of Adult and Academic programs at the MOMA, and now teaches at the New School.
Librería Donceles functions as both a working bookstore and a participatory installation, wherein artistic activities and events designed to facilitate cultural exchange and encourage social activism will be hosted (stay tuned for this future programming).
The books in this show are for sale, at pay-what-you wish rate, following the ethos of the show which is 1) to address the lack of bookstores that serve the growing Hispanic and Latinx communities in the United States and 2) to create an accessible space for human relationships to blossom without the burden of obligatory spending.
