What happens when a technical object exceeds the abilities of the user in areas which we have felt a sense of human exceptionalism, or demystifies a feature of life that we have held to be sacred, or otherwise produces an awe-inspiring effect due to its scope, complexity, or raw power? In this panel, we will explore the more aesthetic dimensions of powerful technologies which have historically altered the way we live in overt and drastic ways, ranging from the telescope to the atomic bomb.
