"Mute Passion Expressed: Filmworks of Ana Mendieta" meets you where you are and then pushes you past that. It shines a fiery light on what it feels like to have an identity that is othered and exposes the consequences of ignoring evil on your doorstep. Most importantly, the two video works on display — Moffitt Building Piece (1973) and Anima, Silueta de Cohetes (1976) — force us to confront our complicity in certain situations: namely, the times we let someone suffer without helping.
Both films, searingly and vividly, compel one to consider the red, rotten fruits of both externalized and sublimated violence. When was I neutral when I should have been passionate? This question haunts these works and drive our inquiry.
Some other thematic questions that informed the creation of this show include:
"Who am I to you?”
“Can my anger lead to good?"
“What sets your blood on fire?"
We urge you to grapple with these ideas as you spend time with these landmark works of video art.
