A major question of the St. John’s program is the problem of formalizing the axioms of mathematics. Part of the approach of contemporary mathematics is a system of simple axioms concerning "sets" through which it attempts to construct the other fundamental objects of mathematics, a path started by junior tutorial authors Dedekind and Cantor and further developed over the course of decades. In the remaining four weeks of this semester, this group will study these axioms. This topic will interest anyone who has wondered about the foundations of mathematics, as well as those who would like an introduction to the language of contemporary math.
