A violent tale of the American Southwest and the border with Mexico. Based on historic events, McCarthy’s novel is a profound meditation on good and evil, violence and humanity, damnation and redemption. His characters “The Kid” and “The Judge” have taken their place alongside similarly morally ambiguous heroes of American fiction such as Melville’s Captain Ahab and Faulkner’s Thomas Sutpen. Against the backdrop of bounty hunters and Indian wars, McCarthy’s tale unfolds in prose as gorgeous as the disturbing quality of the violence and conflict it describes.

Teachers joining us for our online seminar will discuss the text in a small, interactive class led by St. John’s faculty. The seminar will be followed by a discussion about ways in which what has been learned and discussed might be integrated into your own classrooms.
