Thornton Lockwood, Professor of Philosophy at Quinnipiac University, will deliver his lecture "On Aristotle's Politics: Nature, justice, and constitutions."
Several senses of the term "nature" feature prominently in the first book of Aristotle's Politics, although the term is generally absent from the rest of the Politics; justice and the notion of "constitution" (πολιτεία) figure prominently in the remainder of the Politics, and yet they are curiously absent from the first book. My lecture seeks to elucidate all three terms, in part to unpack the basic concepts of the Politics for a first-time reader, in part to think about what insights Aristotle offers us today with our own challenges to understand nature and sustainability.
This lecture is free and open to the public.
