When is a threshold just an in-between space, and when is it the whole point? A threshold is at once a place, a metaphor, and a structure given to us by language. It marks the space between one thing and another. Drawing on notes from the artist's studio, this talk asks what changes when a threshold is worked from different directions, in different sculptural materials, across different artworks.

Jillian Conrad is an artist working across sculpture, drawing, and installation. Her work explores landscape, perception, and the ways people orient themselves in the world. She is a recipient of a Fulbright Scholar Award to Cardiff University, Wales, and her work has been exhibited at the Menil Drawing Institute, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Bronx Museum, and Socrates Sculpture Park, among other venues. Conrad is Professor of Sculpture and Coordinator of the Sculpture Program at the University of Houston.
